La ricerca si concentra su metodologie come la modellazione ambientale, GIS, telerilevamento, geofisica, geostatistica o datamining che vengono applicate nella valutazione spazio-temporale dei suoli, delle proprietà del suolo, nonché per valutare la dinamica dei processi di formazione della superficie terrestre come l'erosione del suolo e i movimenti di massa. Le metodologie vengono applicate anche per la ricostruzione del paleoambiente.
Il gruppo di ricerca sta lavorando su plot, versante e bacini idrografici effettuando valutazioni qualitative e quantitative delle condizioni attuali cosi come delle situazioni passate e future. Pertanto, scenari specifici vengono valutati tenendo conto sia le condizioni futuri che quelli passati che riflettono i cambiamenti climatici e/o delle condizioni socio-economiche.
