The Herbarium Universitatis Ticinensis (PAV) is the largest and most important in Lombardy, and one of the most important in Northern Italy, with an estimated number of over 200,000 specimens, including numerous nomenclatural types. Its establishment dates back to the time of Giovanni Antonio Scopoli's directorship. It comprises a cryptogamic section (fungi, lichens, and mosses) and a much larger section dedicated to vascular plants. The Herbarium currently plays a fundamental role in supporting taxonomic and floristic research and the teaching activities of the Natural and Biological Sciences degree programs. Like other institutional herbaria, each year the Herbarium of the University of Pavia receives requests from scholars from all over Italy and the rest of the world, aiming to examine the specimens preserved here for taxonomic and phytogeographic research. The most important collections are: "Lombard Herbarium," "General Herbarium," "Gasparrini Herbarium," "Comolli Herbarium," and "Collectio Festucarum."
