Mineralogy and Petrography Applied to Cultural Heritage
This line of research aims to study the issues of architectural heritage preservation and the degradation processes of various building materials (stone, mortar, ceramics, and bricks). Through appropriate analytical techniques, it is possible to identify and diagnose the causes of degradation and recognize the degradation products depending on the various types of materials. The main analytical methodologies required for diagnosing pathologies of lithoid materials, ceramics, terracotta, bricks, and mortars are: porosimetry, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM – ESEM), X-ray diffractometry, and X-ray fluorescence. This research is often conducted in collaboration with archaeologists, engineers, and chemists.
