Research topics

1. Carbon biofixation in coccolithophores: characterization of organic and inorganic matter

Target species of coccolithophores, cultivated under controlled conditions at the Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS), are isolated and mapped in organic and inorganic content according to different techniques. The objective is to evaluate the biogeochemical variations as a function of environmental parameters.

2. Effects of ocean acidification on living and fossil coccolithophores

Using coccolithophores to reconstruct the times and modes of Pleistocene climate variability in the western Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the alternation of glacial and interglacial phases and the effects of ocean acidification on carbonate tests are investigated also with laboratory simulations.
