ERC Sectors: PE10_6 Palaeoclimatology, palaeoecology

Research topics

1. The research focuses on the relationship between calcareous microbiota (calcareous nannofossils and foraminifera) and the carbon cycle in the oceans, especially during the climatic phases of the Pleistocene. In particular, for coccolithophores, a new research will be undertaken regarding the related taphonomic processes within the TAF (taphonomic active zone) through laboratory simulations and studies on the fossil record. Overall, the research theme is conducted by researchers from the Department of Earth Sciences in collaboration with many research institutes including the National Institute of Oceanography and Geophysics (OGS, Trieste)

2. Carbonate platforms are sedimentary archives that record the evolution of the global carbon cycle. Their stratigraphic architecture depends on regional tectonics, which controls subsidence, on geometries as well as on paleoceanography and evolutionary trends that control the different bioconstructor organisms that produce the margin. The research, active for years in collaboration with the ETH Zurich and the Department of Geosciences of the University of Padua, aims to reconstruct the impacts of carbon cycle anomalies on the "carbonate factory"

3. The research deals with the integrated analysis of calcareous-foraminiferal nannofossils for biostratigraphic and paleoenvironmental purposes for the reconstruction of the evolution of sedimentary basins.
Currently this research is applied to the Italian Geological Cartography projects (CARG Project) and in particular to the Foglio Pavia
